I don't review all the lights offered to me.. if a light doesn't seem compelling on paper, I'll often pass. Sometimes one.. 'slips through' and I end up with it anyway. That's the case here. I received this light from GearBest, in a shipment with some other items for review. The light doesn't even have a brand - called simply 'USB Rechargeable Flashlight' on the product page. Let's see how it fares.
Typo in the title: XM-L2, not XP-L2.
Official Specs and Features:
● CREE XM-L2 LED, boasts out 1100Lm maximum output
● Dynamic cycle infinitely variable dimming for your desired brightness
● Micro USB charging port gives you rechargeable convenience
● Power indicator built into side switch to display remaining battery

Only this version. No tint options or anything.
MSRP
Gearbest price is $11.75, which I'll take as the MSRP for this generic light.
I'm sure the designer's mom is proud of this light.
Long Review:
- USB Rechargeable Flashlight
- Plastic case
- Ultrafire 3000mAh cell *
* not actually 3000mAh
Pictures
Here is the picture album which includes beamshots, a runtime (with a 3500mAh not 5200mAh as the chart is labeled), and a charge graph.
The light comes in a plastic case which looks kind of nice on the outside - even looks like a Pelican to some degree. The case is incredibly cheap, and in no way whatsoever resembles a Pelican once handled. It does hold and protect the light though, so I can't fault it necessarily.
There is no manual but the UI - while unusual - is not tricky. However it would be beneficial to know if this light will accept 2x18350 for example, and the manual would be useful for that.
Build Quality and Disassembly
Unfortunately I can't say much good about the build quality here. In a lot of these reviews you basically just have to take my word for how a light feels. I've handled a few flashlights, so I have a reasonable base for feel on lights. The feel on this one is: cheap. I hesitate to call it a clone of something like the Nitecore MH20GT, because that does a disservice to better clones. But on a scale of build quality, where the Nitenumen NE01 fell well short of the Nitecore MH20, this light falls well short of the Nitenumen.
Take for example the switch. There's a red anodized surround on that switch for no apparent reason. It sticks up an unreasonable amount. And then pocket clip which is like those cheap forks at suspect restaurants.. too-thin metal and sharp edges.
Some parts are as they should be. The boot over the micro-USB is secure. The threads are ok but just. Neither great nor horrible. It's great that there's some glow in the dark parts. The knurling is ok as well, but not very grippy at all.
The light can be disassembled. The driver is held in place by an aluminum retaining ring, so an emitter swap isn't out of the question. The reflector is actually threaded into the head of the light!

I believe this light is approximately the size of the Nitecore MH20GT. It's a great size, if a little long. Quoted at 12.40 x 3.20 x 3.20 cm.

Retention
There's the case, which isn't really useful for carrying the light on one's person, but would be good for bag-carry. Also included is an attached pocket clip. As stated above, this clip is very low quality - it's thin and sharp. It's also in a bad location for carrying this light - though hardly a fault of this light in particular: It's just hard to carry lights this shape (thin body, larger head) with a pocket clip. Not even a lanyard hole in the tailcap, either.
The light works with a single 18650. Due to the lack of a manual's statement of 2x18350 support, I didn't try. Honestly based on the quality of the rest of the light, I wouldn't push my luck here.
The light has onboard charging. It works. It doesn't work well. It's a very low charge speed (appx 0.5A). Not only that, it's inconsistent. That can be seen on the charge graph. So while a cell can be charged, there are much better options.
The side switch is an indicating switch - when the light is on and the switch is green, the cell has appropriate charge. If red, the cell needs to be charged. The same indicators are true for operation of the onboard charging.
The micro-USB port for charging felt very secure, and did work.
Also included is a single Ultrafire 18650. The label says 3000mAh, and while I didn't use the cell in the light, I did test it. The testing indicated it's about 1600mAh. I would steer very far away from this cell. (Mine'll go into recycling.)
User Interface and Operation
Download teamwork projects for mac. There's one side switch. It's not silicone, but it's not hard plastic either. It is translucent to allow for the red/green indicators. The switch is easy to find, and has a positive click with little pressure required. Enough so that I had one accidental activation during carry.
State | Action | Result |
---|---|---|
Off | Click | On (Memory) |
On | Click | Off |
On | Hold | Mode ramp * |
On | Double Click | Strobe |
* Ramp is top to bottom and back. So if the ramping is going up, it'll go up all the way to High. Then the light will flash a bit, and start it's journey back to low.
Mini 123 Driver Download
The UI is easy to understand but I found it incredibly difficult to actually get a mode I wanted to use. Nevermind that I'd typically have to go through high to get to low if I was wanting low, or vice versa for high, just out of what seemed like sheer bad luck with where the output was currently. Strobe was much too easy to activate, and there aren't shortcuts for anything (well, except strobe.) sadpanda.
The emitter is a Cree XM-L2. The tint is also quite blue. I'm not strictly speaking a tint snob, but I didn't care for the tint at all. (I estimate it's well on the high end of the rated 5000-6000K) (at least).

There are a ton of other lights in this size category. The first one that comes to mind is the Nitecore MH20GT (or just the MH20). Of course that's nearly 10x the cost. The Nitenumen NE01 which I reviewed critically in the past, has been updated so that would probably compare nicely and also be much more reasonable in cost.
Conclusion
I can't recommend this light. I don't like it, I'm glad I don't have to test it any more, and I'm not even sure what I'll do with it from here.
123 Battery Flashlight
Though it's not really in the same class (since it's a tube light), if you really want onboard charging in this price, you should really buy the Eagle Eye X2R (that's an affiliate link), which I reviewed ages ago, and was very satisfied with. If you do buy that light, use the coupon X2R3CBK to get the price down to $14.69 (though, there are only 20 units at that price). (Or pick your own light and use GB17LED for 12% off.)

Driver Mini Game
Thanks to GearBest for sending this light for review.
- 3500 mAh cell used in runtime, not (the non-existent) 5200mAh cell
- XM-L2 not XP-L2 (as I stated in the title, where it can't be edited)
- Graph fixed and re uploaded
